Art Camps

McMurry Art Camp week is June 5 - 9, 2017 with art classes offered in painting, clay, Photoshop, drawing, and photography for children (completed Kinder and up), teens (including portfolio building) and adults. Campers sign-up for one or more courses during the week. The art classes are taught by McMurry Art faculty and Abilene artists, and assisted by college art students in the McMurry art facilities. There will also be adult photography and adult ceramics classes offered in July.

ARTISTS:

Calvin Brown, MFA in Painting and Drawing, has had his work exhibited in various galleries across Texas. He is an instructor of drawing, painting and art history.

Jennifer Nichols is a freelance photographer in Abilene and instructor of gallery studies and photography at McMurry University.  She is also Gallery Director at McMurry and shoots for the Abilene Zoo and several magazines in the area.  Jennifer is a signature artist member at the Center for Contemporary Arts.

Tyson Terry, MFA in Graphic Design, is an Assistant Professor of Art. Tyson has been teaching graphic design for over 11 years.

Larry Millar, Abilene artist, art teacher and renown dinosaur hunter will teach printmaking.

Kathie Walker-Millar, MFA in ceramics and MEd, is an award winning artist and Professor of Art. She is a signature member of the Center for Contemporary Art and her work has been exhibited in galleries across the region. She teaches ceramics, painting and art history at McMurry University.

Patty Rae Wellborne is an award winning professional artist. Her works have been exhibited in numerous galleries and shows across West Texas. 

COURSES:

CHILDREN

Painting like the Masters for Children with Patty Rae
9 a.m. – 10 a.m. - $75 ($95 after May 15)
Entering 1st – 6th Grade
Instructor: Patty Rae Wellborn

Do you want to learn how to paint like the Old Masters? In this course, children will study with Patty Rae to learn how to mix colors and paint in the style of some famous painters. Students will leave with a completed work on canvas at the end of the week.

Drawing II
10 a.m. – 11 a.m. - $75 ($95 after May 15)
Entering 4th – 6th Grade
Instructor: Calvin Brown

Older children will work with a variety of different media such as charcoal, pencil, pastels and color pencils to improve their drawing skills. Students will take home completed works at the end of the week.

Photography I

Have you ever wondered how photography began?  This summer the photography course at each level will delve into several early forms of photography in the dark room including photograms, the pin hole camera, cyanotypes, anthotypes and hand coloring, culminating in an Alternative Process Photography portfolio.

Clay Totems with Kathie
1 p.m. – 2 p.m. - $75 ($95 after May 15)
Entering 4th – 6th
Instructor: Kathie Walker-Millar

Tell your family or pet story by creating clay totem in this exciting class for older children! Students will learn about Native American totem poles and use clay handbuilding techniques, experience wheel throwing, glazing and painting techniques during this course. Each student will take home completed works at the end of the week.

Printmaking I
1 p.m. – 2 p.m. - $75 ($95 after May 15)
Entering 1st – 3rd Grade
Instructor: Larry Millar

Students in this course will explore several printmaking techniques from mono prints to nature prints in these one hour sessions. Each student will take home completed works at the end of the week. 

Dino Clay with Kathie
2 p.m. – 3 p.m. - $75 ($95 after May 15)
Entering 1st – 3rd Grade
Instructor: Kathie Walker-Millar

Explore the world of dinosaurs though clay! In this course, children will learn clay handbuilding techniques to construct a dinosaur and their tracks and experience the potter’s wheel with guidance. At the end of the week, each child will take home a completed work of art.

Photoshop Basics
2 p.m. – 3 p.m. - $75 ($95 after May 15)
Entering 4th – 6th Grade
Instructor: Tyson Terry

A basic introduction to Photoshop covering tools, creating selections, combining multiple images into one, working with text, using panels and layering options, and advanced web searching for high resolution images. These skills will be used to build a composite image to print. At the end of the week, students will leave with a series of completed works to take home. Students need to bring a thumb drive with them to class.

Printmaking II
3 p.m. – 4 p.m. - $75 ($95 after May 15)
Entering 4th – 6th Grade
Instructor: Larry Millar

Students in this course will explore several printmaking techniques from nature prints to screen prints in these one hour sessions. Each student will take home completed works at the end of the week.

TEENS

Drawing III

In this course, students will look at master portrait painters and create portraits using layered images and acrylic on canvas. Students will take home a completed work at the end of the week.

Photoshop Fundamentals for Teens
1 p.m. – 2 p.m. - $75 ($95 after May 15)
Entering 7th – 12th Grade
Instructor: Tyson Terry

Study with an Adobe Photoshop certified instructor to learn the basics. Students will explore Photoshop tools to combine multiple images, work with text, panels and layering options to create composite images ready to print. At the end of the week, students will leave with a series of completed works to take home. Students need to bring a thumb drive with them to class.

Functional and Sculptural Ceramics Cups and Vessels for Teens
3 p.m. – 4 p.m. - $75 ($95 after May 15)
Entering 7th – 12th Grade
Instructor: Kathie Walker-Millar

This course will explore functional and sculptural cups and bowls ceramics design through wheel throwing, handbuilding, Cone 6 and Raku firing techniques. Completed work will be picked up the following week.

Portfolio Building Workshops (Drawing, Photography and Graphic Design)
Graphic Design: 9 AM – 10:30 AM; Drawing 1 PM – 2:30 PM; Photography 2:30 PM – 4 PM - $95 ($115 after May 15)
Entering 10th – 12th Grade
Instructors: Brown, Nichols, Terry 

These sessions are designed for the serious high school art student. Students will have the opportunity to work with college instructors to develop a cohesive body of work for college, Advanced Placement or a Pre- Advanced Placement portfolio. During these workshops students will develop personal voice by strengthening their artistic skills, and adding to their portfolios.

ADULTS

Exploring Functional and Sculptural Tea Pots
9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. - $95 ($115 after May 15)
Adults (appropriate for all-level teachers)
Instructor: Kathie Walker-Millar

In this course, students will create storytelling tea pots using wheel throwing, handbuilding, sculpture, Cone 6 and Raku firing techniques.  Completed work will be picked up the following week.

Photoshop Fundamentals for Adults
10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. - $95 ($115 after May 15)
Adults (appropriate for all-level teachers)

Acrylic Painting Boot Camp for Adults with Patty Rae
1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. - $95 ($115 after May 15)
Entering 11th Grade – Adults (appropriate for all-level teachers)
Instructor: Patty Rae Wellborn

Study painting and composition with award winning studio artist Patty Rae Wellborn in this week long course for adults. Learn how to mix color, apply it to canvas and more. Students will leave with a completed work on canvas at the end of the week.
